How to Find a Good Apartment in a Safe Area

Apartment Search in USA
In every city in USA there are several apartments. It becomes very hard to visit each and every one to decide which is good. Here comes some handy tips.

Rent.com
Rent.com is an excellent resource to find an apartment. You get a toll free number to call each apartment. You can search apartments in each city by number of rooms, resident ratings and price range.

ApartmentRatings.com
This website covers what Rent.com won't. Before making a decision always check what past residents say about the apartment. Also check the crime rating of the site. We moved once into a good apartment only to find latter that area is infested with high crime. One person was murdered in a near by house. People stared at us oddly when we walked on sidewalks.

So its a two way process. First check the apartment price range, closeness, and amenities on Rent.com. Check resident ratings and crime ratings on apartmentratings. com. Rent.com gave us $100 card after we moved into the apartment found on their website.

You can do your research online before landing in USA. You can also write email to apartment manager. Sometimes you will get better deals on sublet on Craigslist.com. You can sublet the apartment at a lower price and then move into a better one as you become familiar with city and area.

If you are in USA for a short period or a student you may look for closeness to office/school, bus stops and grocery stores.

Save money with Free TV and Movies

When you are in the USA for a short period of 1-3 months or as a student you can save money buy watching free high quality TV and movies online from the sites below. Monthly subscription for TV costs $35 and up.

Hulu.com
This site is leader in the area of free entertainment. TV shows are updated next day after they are shown on TV. Also shows such as Married with Children, I dream of Genie. Website put ads between the show like real TV. Hulu interface is its strong point. Movies with reviews of *** and above are good to watch. Others are really difficult to digest.

Crackle.com
Website just like Hulu but interface is kind of dark.

Clicker.com
Another website which most comprehensive in its collection. But again interface is not trendy to look.

CBS.com
If you know the channel what they are streaming. Go ahead just watch your favorite series on CBS.com.

PBS.org
PBS is a great channel with lots of videos which are not available elsewhere but only in PBS videos section.

One more important thing. Don't even attempt to watch/download/upload/host any music, TV shows, movies illegally. Someday you may get FBI/Recording Industry Assoc. of America at your doorstep. You can not argue that everybody is doing this. Read one such horror story appeared in NYtimes here.

Useful Websites in USA - Shopping

Useful Websites in USA You Can't Live Without

I am compiling the list of the most popular and useful sites when you are in USA.

Shopping
Amazon.com
Amazon sells large variety of items from books, electronics, toys, cloths, movies, songs, tools and outdoors stuff.Amazon introduced an eBook reader Kindle in 2008 for reading eBooks easily. Kindle is revolutionary as it offers instant deliver and books are priced at lower price than hard copies. Biggest advantage of Amazon Kindle is that you can install the Kindle software on your PC or iphone. You can browse almost 50% of the eBook before buying. I have purchased both eBooks, clothes, laptops and text books. Standard shipping always delivered items in 3 days. I also have good experience in returning or order cancellation process. There is no sales tax on the Amazon purchase as it does not have any physical store anywhere in USA. So it makes sense to purchase laptop or LCDs from Amazon. Amazon reviews are also another great thing. Always read the reviews written by users before making any decision to purchase.

eBay.com
I never bought anything on ebay. I know both good and bad stories about the purchases made from different sellers on ebay.

Buy.com
Another good site to buy from, but ads mixed in between searches makes it difficult to search products. My delivery took longer than what Amazon usually takes.

Target.com
I shopped at both store and online. Target now a days prices similar to Walmart. Target has excellent bakery section. Online store has more collection than actual store.

Walmart.com
Website has no good search engine. Best way to locate an item is to use Google.com and search for "item+walmart.com". Most items are lowest priced. Some items are available with 1cent shipping to store. This is particularly good for any large stuff like mattress you order.

Bestbuy.com
I always check Amazon and Bestbuy.com prices before making any purchase. Not to mention there is tax difference you have to consider when making purchase. But you can get the feel of your purchase at Bestbuy store and returns are easy. I purchased a laptop and returned it immediately with no restocking fee. I also got rewards for the previous purchases with reward program.

Sears.com
Large collection of hardware and home tools are the key points for this store.

Clothes
Gap.com
Gap has unique styling and trendy clothes. Best thing is you can get the Gap Card earn rewards and discounts for your next purchases. If you are card holder you can order stuff from Gap.com and return it to the store without any charges.

Macys.com
Large collection of clothes and lots of other stuff. Get discounts by getting Macy's card. Good value for money spent.

Sportswear and footwear
Dickssportingoods.com
Number one store in US for any sportswear, sport equipment or foot wear.

Zappos.com
They are so good about customer service Amazon bought them. Store sales shoes, clothes, and handbags. Free shipping and free return with 24/7 customer service.

Deals
Deals2buy.com
Never buy anything without checking deals from sellers. Deals2buy.com is the most comprehensive in getting top deals from every store. Sometimes it is difficult to notice good deals due to its arrangement.

Dealsea.com
I love this site due to the simplicity and selectivity of the stuff. I always saved 100s of dollars with deals on camera, software, clothes and laptop.

Also before making any purchase online just Google for any copoun code. I bet you will save some money. I saved money on from milk to recliner. Some nice people have great habit of leaving Grocery Coupons near the item. I am thankful to them.

Travel Booking
Cheapflights.com
Kayak.com
Orbitz.com
Hotel.com
Southwest.com

amtrak.com
I used Amtrak only once. I was completely disappointed as it was late on schedule and compartments were unbearably smelly.  I had no option to travel between two cities for $40. One way rental costs for car was very high about $110.

greyhound.com
Greyhound has most comprehensive coverage of bus service in USA. There are alternatives bus services which offer even higher quality buses depending on your area you live. Buses are good sometimes if you live 2-3 hr drive from international airport. All bus companies have a bus service linking to the major airports. It is a good idea to do the advance booking online with a bus provider.

Purchasing Old Stuff

Goodwill.com
Cost little to purchase old furniture, electronics and clothes. You have to visit often to get something good.

Craigslits.com
Find the craigslist website for your city. Search for the item you need. You can get really good deal on the furniture, electronics, cars, apartment. You can post and sell your stuff too.

Each city has its own popular website apart from these two above. For example we always used statecollege.com to sell and buy stuff than craigslist.com.

Health Insurance for Your USA Travel

Apart from e-ticket and passport, health insurance is the most important part of your USA travel. Health care in USA is the very costly. I am giving below costs of the few services based on my personal experience and Blue Cross Blue Shield website.
  • Office visits for common reasons ~ $120-200
  • Medical tests ~ $5-600
  • Hospital stays ~ $700 per day or more
  • Over the counter medicine ~ $10
  • Dental care ~ $300 for each filling
  • Dental surgeries ~ $1000 and more
No wonder the first question a health care provider in USA ask is
Who is your health insurance provider? At this moment you have to give your insurance card, which bears your name and Insurance providers details.

Health Insurance for Short Travel
If you are traveling to USA for a period of 6 months or less, it is better to take travel insurance policy from the company in your country. Travel insurance is also very costly in USA, compared to the costs anywhere else in the world. Travel insurance policies typically cover the health care, urgent hospitalization, emergency evacuation, SOS and dental services. You may think that you are completely healthy person and don't need the insurance. Be careful, I know a student who slipped at the airport and broke his teeth costing thousands for dental care.

Health Insurance for Students Traveling to USA.
Students studying abroad need insurance coverage before the start of University health insurance, which begins after classes start. Typically, students have to reach University town early in order to enrol in University, open a bank account, find a job and hunt for an apartment. This means students must purchase travel insurance coverage from the day they land in the foriegn country and the start of the classes. Considering the high cost of the health coverage abroad, risk associated with the health and financial issues impacting your future degree, purchasing travel insurance is an important part of your study abroad  plan.

Purchasing Health Insurance
Universities and employers pay for large (~80%) of the total insurance costs. If your employer does not pay for your insurance you can purchase the affordable health insurance in USA. You can compare the several plans on ehealthinsurance.com or directly visit the insurance providers website. Several popular insurance providers are Anthem, Aetna, Humana, Blue Cross Blue Shield and United. Once purchase has been made, you will receive a insurance card in your mailbox.

What to Look for when Purchasing Health Insurance
Deductible- It is the amount you have to pay before insurance pays for medical costs. For example lets say deductible is $500 and medical costs are $1200. You have to pay $500 and insurance company will pay remaining $700.

Co-payment- It is the amount you have to pay each time you avail the medical service. For example insurance company may require you pay $15 co-payment for each visit to medical practitioner or prescription drugs purchased.

PPO Plan- Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plan requires you to visit only doctors and hospitals in the network. You can search for preferred provider either by calling the Insurance company or searching on the website of the provider. If you visit out of network provider, charges are higher.

HMO Plan- Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) requires you to select a primary care physician and offers a lesser flexibility in selection of physician. HMO plans are cheaper compared to PPO.

Tip- Everyone prefers to have lower deductible, but that also increases the cost of insurance. If you think you visit doctor 3 times a year or single, the go for higher deductible plans. For families usually low deductible plans are a better option.

Dealing Insurance Bills and Appealing
Errors due happen in processing your insurance bills. I personally have saved $1500 in my insurance bills by keeping log of each bill paid and deductible limit. If you think there is something incorrect about the bill, you can write an appeal against the bill. You can also attach a letter from the doctor if required. You can send your appeal to the insurance provider's appeal section.

Once my doctor suggested some mandatory tests costing $250. My insurance company refused to pay for these tests stating them unnecessary. When I appealed, I was sent some medical research document. I requested my doctor for a letter and appealed again. When even this did not work, I told my HR which helped to receive insurance payment. I also found errors like pharmacy and office visit bills not submitted by hospital to Insurance Co.

How to carry money when traveling to USA?

Custom Limit of $10,000
When traveling to USA you can choose from cash, credit card issued in your country, traveler’s checks, preloaded travel card.
If you carry money more than $10,000, you have to sign a declaration at the customs to disclose the purpose in your possession.  Failure to declare currency in amounts over $10,000  subject to forfeiture and could result in civil and criminal penalties. Students carrying a demand draft for university fees also need to sign this document, if they have over $10,000 in total.  This limit also applies while leaving the USA.
Traveler’s Checks or Travel Cards?
For clearing travelers check you need to carry passport for identification purposes. Whereas a travelers card can be preloaded with amount of funds required. You can use it anywhere like a normal debit card. It can also be used to withdraw cash with some fees (~$2) on each withdrawal. Most importantly students can swipe it in the bank to transfer funds immediately to their newly opened bank account in USA. I used SBI Travel card and faced no fee for money transfer to bank. This card can also be reloaded with cash and can be used over the longer period. This is an ideal option for most travelers and especially for international students.
How Much Cash Should I Carry?
It is best to carry some cash with you as you may need it for making a call on airport, calling a taxi or for food. Keep some quarters (25 cents) with you as they are needed for making paid telephone calls. Taxi services in most cities accept credit cards as a form of payments.
Tip- You can pre-order a taxi for you before leaving your home by Google map search for taxi service in a US city.

Making Investment Investment in USA

If you are a student or working on H1B visa, you can invest in mutual funds, stocks, bonds and ETFs. Your legal status for this purpose is termed as Resident Alien.
The most flexible options, I found are with Charles Schwab. They have no fees for any saving/checking accounts and free checks. You can invest in selected funds with no entry load. Vanguard also have funds with low operating expenses.
TipSmall amount invested in mutual funds each month can reward you handsome gains due to averaging over a year. However keep your investment diverse in bonds and mutual funds. Look for the past performance of the funds as well as the companies in the portfolio.
Retirement Planning
If you intend to immigrate to USA, you can also open a Roth IRA account. With this account savings and gains are tax free when you withdraw. Inside ROTH account, you can select options for fund allocation into bonds, mutual funds and stocks. Starting early is always a better option for retirement savings.

Banking in USA

Opening a Bank Account in USA
Two most prominent forms of banking options in USA are credit unions and commercial banks. Credit unions are local banks and are member of National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). Several large commercial banks in USA include Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and PNC. A bank account is required to pay for rent and paying your dues. Apartments rarely accept credit payment and need payment by check.
Credit Unions
Most of the credit union offers you a saving/checking account with no minimum balance. You can also request for a few free checks. Additional checks needs to be ordered for a fee.
Credit unions also provide a unique way of instant withdrawal and deposit of funds across entire USA without fees. For example, I have withdrawn funds from my bank account in Pennsylvania from a credit union in Wisconsin immediately without paying any charge. You can also do deposits with affiliated credit unions listed on bank’s homepage.
When you new in USA, you do not have enough credit history to get a credit card. After initial 2 months period you can request your local credit union for a card.
Tip- If you have any traveler check or cash in traveler card, you can deposit that money in your bank account without any fees.  Traveler card is safe, cheap and easier to use any place like a preloaded credit card.
Commercial Banks
Several of the commercial banks offer wide array of services. Chase, PNC, BoFA offer a free checking account for students. Advantage of commerical banks are wide array of services from banking, investment, retirement. Typically commercial banks are good after you graduate and start earning a good income. There is a fee to maintain account and waived only if you have a direct deposit from your employer (University or Company).
Fees to Watch For
Overdraft Protection Fees –  In case you do not have sufficient funds to clear check in your name, over draft protection withdraws funds from your saving account to clear a check. If no overdraft protection is set, then you end up in paying heavy penalty about 25 $ for each check bounced.  It is best to enroll for overdraft protection immediately when you open a new bank account. PNC bank for example allows only initial enrollment, afterwards its impossible. Banks annually make billions of dollar due to this fee. Read an article in NY Times here.
Tip- Apologize to the person whom you have issued bounced check.  In case this person is your renting agency, this may save you from another fine. Don’t forget to submit funds and issue another check.
Debit Card Fees- Check for any quarterly fee for minimum use. Credit unions again do not have these fees. Fees could range anywhere from 8-10$.
Extra Checks- You can request bank to send check each month to your renter for free. You can also pay your telephone, internet, electricity bills for free online. Still if you are planning to live in USA for longer than 6 months, its good to have more checks. Banks charge a 10$ fee to get 5 booklets of checks.
Fees for Minimum Balance or Transactions- Check with your bank about these fees. Bank information booklets are pretty thick and easy to get lost. You can shop around by calling each bank and asking for fees. Settle for the ones with minimum fees and good services.

I personally use Chase, credit union for general banking purposes. Chase has excellent customer support and website. Credit union offers me low interest car loan. I also have account in Charles Schwab  for investing, which also feature free checks, no maintenance fees, free ATM withdrawals in entire world.
